Most of the Texas Seven have already been put to death, so we really shouldn’t treat him differently than everyone else that was there. Carl Dewey Pretty clever. But this guy is the one who the judge had a personal hatred for. The result will probably be the same but in America, you’re supposed to get a FAIR trial, especially before they kill you. So from this judge, you can only expect a fair trial if you are white and the right type of Christian, he would fit right in with the current administration. I’m against the death penalty, but please don’t make a poster child of this guy. He’s fucking evil. So is the racist judge. You don’t need to create sympathy for the former to call out the latter. I doubt that the pound puppy expression in your featured photo above is the last thing seen by the 16-month-old he beat to death. ACLU, please don’t. I hate the death penalty as much as any human should. But please don’t equate religious prejudice with racial inequality. I can change my name at any time. The judge should be removed from the bench. But, this fuck admitted to being there and under the Snoopy Pennywise do you want a balloon shirt a death as part of a robbery all members are counted as coconspirators in the death and charged as if each pulled the trigger.
He was previously serving a sentence for having curb-stomped a toddler he was babysitting, breaking all his limbs and his skull. Capital murder happened as a result of a prison break. He should’ve gotten the death penalty the first time around. Is anti-Semitism acceptable to you or not? A guilty verdict is separate from sentencing. Nobody is suggesting that Halprin be exonerated. The issue is that the judge’s anti-Semitism colored his decision to sentence Halprin to death. The alternative to capital punishment is life without parole, not leniency and release. If they’d said, “Look, due process is due process, and we do everything BY THE BOOK, even for the most detestable defendants alive,” sure. Remove the Snoopy Pennywise do you want a balloon shirt, give him a retrial, and all the rest. But to gloss over what he did and feature this revolting photo of him staring into the camera like a sad puppy dog? Screw that. Lisa Shaftel Given that his capital murder happened as the result of a prison break, I don’t know that I’d take any comfort in “life without parole.”
Chris Liberti: The issue here is not about the guilty, which was already established. It’s about an unethical judge imposing death on a defendant because he is Jewish. Schools should really begin teaching critical thinking skills. Nora Villagrán Early No, it’s not shocking. Anti-Semitism is very common in the US. That’s a separate issue from any philosophical or constitutional arguments about capital punishment. Some people believe very strongly about using the death penalty as vengeance when they judge the victim to be wholly sympathetic (such as a child). The legal concept of the American Justice System is supposed to be based on the philosophy of justice, not the philosophy of vengeance. The philosophy of vengeance involves judging the victim and to mete out “an eye for an eye” punishment. If you’ve scanned over a lot of comments, what’s shocking is how many Americans have no issue with the anti-Semitism of the judge because they support a vengeful sentence. A lot of people believe that the ends justify the means. I find that shocking.
