Edward Randolph, how do you explain the *nearly universal* shortening of yellow light times when such cameras are installed? Because the technology allows for them to easily abuse it for their own purposes (ticket revenue in this case) at the expense of us all (increase in accidents from people slamming on brakes to avoid tickets from overzealous light times). This is a clear example of how your disputed slippery slopes exist. A surveillance state treats everyone as criminals, guilty until proven innocent. Incidentally, concerning stoplight cameras, what about those intersections where the lights don’t trip for bicycles in traffic? Why do lights like that even exist? I’m willing to bet I could get ticketed for running one of those lights on a bike, yet they still won’t do anything about that problem, even when it’s caught on camera. Edward Randolph as it is, far less “powerful” information is already being collected massively and IS already being leveraged by self-serving institutions of power. We’ve seen the whistleblowing of what the NSA and other Heifer Tell me not to do something and I will do it twice and take pictures shirt surveillance orgs were doing and how they walked all over our right to privacy, why should I volunteer to give up even more control over my identity? Doubly so, why would I trust the TSA of all things with safeguarding that data?
Edward Randolph, It sounds like you trust the government and others in positions of power a lot. So you think there is no chance we are already drifting toward a surveillance state even without considering the possible implementation of facial recognition? I think the fundamental difference here is that you trust our government and spy agencies and law enforcement to always do what is right. And you believe that if they ever did violate the law, violate peoples rights, that they would admit wrongdoing and correct themselves and hold people accountable. Conversely to your beliefs, I’ve seen myriad evidence that our government from politicians to spy agencies to law enforcement think they can secretly violate peoples rights at a whim, cover it up, deny it, and never face consequences for their Heifer Tell me not to do something and I will do it twice and take pictures shirt. If we let them continue to expand the surveillance state and build extensive profiles on everyone we are sacrificing our rights and opening the door to further abuses. We need a better system of checks and balances and a full accounting of current practices before we even think about allowing more government control of our lives. These entities are not benign.
China has cameras everywhere and is expanding the use of facial recognition. But then they have an authoritarian surveillance state. Do we want to go further down that path? Jimmy Waters interesting. Is this actually facial recognition or facial image comparison between the passport photo and the human facing the machine? The reason I ask is that my passport code is scanned to get my boarding pass in the US. Always wanted to live long enough to see 1984 go into full implementation in the United States of America. Fascism step by step instructions by Miller-Bannon directing Chaos and Fear and Loathing. The Republican Insurgency is complicit. Steve Aldrich Absolutely! Build that wall, top it with razor wire, add guard towers and dogs. If we’re gonna do a thing let’s do it right. But who will pick the produce? Let the homeless do it. Since the want to live in a tent, set up the tents near the fields. If they want to eat, they’ll work. Who’ll work in the kitchens or do landscaping or nanny my kids? Eliminate welfare. There’ll be plenty of jobs for those who want to eat. What about healthcare? Buy insurance, that’s what a paycheck’s for. And the drug addicts and the mentally ill? Not my problem. Set up camps. Just get them off the street. And we’ll need more police, on every corner if necessary, and curfews. I pay tax dollars. But first, start with the wall. We have too many of “those” kind of people as it is.
