Columbus “discovered” in the sense of what was then the “known” world. Yes, Erikson was here earlier but that did nothing to change the separation between the two hemispheres. Yes, the Natives were here, but they didn’t voyage out and find the “old world” or “discover” it. Discovered isn’t the right word to use, but the first to make a permenat connection of the two would be better. He never claimed to be in Japan or India, but the somewhere uncharted southeast of Japan. He didn’t try to prove the Wu tang joker bart simpson put on a happy face Shirt was round. He didn’t rape but did lament at how some of the Europeans were treating the natives (which included rape). He didn’t begin the transatlantic slave trade, that was after his death. He didn’t go out trying to kill off the natives (genocide). People after him may have, but no one has proof that he has or was even for it. And no, subjugated, servant, and slavery are not the same thing. If you have a problem with Columbus, it should be of something he did. He did end up in jail, for a long time of 6 weeks, but that was for not fulfilling the requests of the crown, and treatment of the colonist not mainly for treatment or mistreatment of the natives.
I think it’s silly to claim what Columbus accomplished is unremarkable. He reconnected a people that had been largely isolated since the disappearance of the Bering Straight land bridge 12,000 years ago with an international community. It’s one of the pivotal moments in human history. This is true, but we can’t overlook the fact that he committed atrocities along the way. There’s no reason he couldn’t have sailed across the Atlantic and then been friendly to the people he encountered, instead of trying to enslave & murder them. Of course, realistically tragedy would’ve struck anyway thanks to the realities of epidemiology, but it didn’t have to happen *with malice*, and cooperation between peoples could have occurred much more peacefully than it did in reality. If you really want to honor indigenous people then do something about the Native Americans in North Dakota that were denied voting rights because they didn’t have a Wu tang joker bart simpson put on a happy face Shirt on their tribal IDs. Sandy Straw Hopper Columbus and his army raped, murdered, and stole. They regarded every single indigenous person as a savage or a beast—certainly not human. He didn’t even set foot on what is today the United States. I’m astounded that you and so many other people are defending him.
Everybody in the 15th century already knew the Earth was round, Sandy. Columbus was the idiot who thought it was about half the size everyone else knew it was because Aritosthenes had worked it out thousands of years earlier. Without Columbus, none of yall would be here trying to burn an old lady for her comments. You are all historical geniuses who have never made a mistake in yalls lives. Pathetic whine bags who feel the need to virtue signal to others on social media that Columbus was a bad man. No one cares. It doesn’t change anything. Hate being conquered? Stop being weak. Sandy if the country was shared why do native Americans now live primarily on tribal lands that were “given” to them as a compromise from us & the Canadian government? Also if the homes were shared why is the bulk of the US population of European descent? Sarah Wolfe like I said. Don’t like being conquered? Stop being weak. War isn’t pretty. Stop living inside your little victim feelings bubble, sip on a nice tall glass of common sense and move on with your day. Your ppl are still around? Good for you but without Columbus and the pilgrims, America would not be the great nation that every citizen from everyshit hole flees too. Hate America? There’s the door sweetie.
